New York Sea Grant’s work is organized around four focus areas that reflect the priorities outlined in our 2024-2027 Strategic Plan. These areas guide our research, outreach, and education programs across New York’s marine, estuarine, and Great Lakes communities.

Each focus area addresses real-world coastal challenges and opportunities, connecting science with the people and places that depend on New York’s waters.

1. Healthy Coastal Ecosystems

We support science and partnerships that protect and restore the health of New York’s waters, habitats, and species. This includes efforts to improve water quality, manage aquatic invasive species, monitor harmful algal blooms, and conserve native biodiversity. Our work emphasizes ecosystem-based approaches and collaboration with local resource managers.

2. Resilient Communities and Economies

We help coastal communities prepare for change and build resilience to hazards such as flooding, erosion, and severe storms. Our work supports sustainable development, working waterfronts, and economic planning by providing data, tools, and expertise that inform decision-making. We engage with local leaders, planners, and residents to identify priorities and co-develop solutions.

3. Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture

We connect science with industry to support vibrant, sustainable seafood systems in New York. This includes research and outreach on aquaculture practices, fishery management, seafood safety, and market development. We also support recreational and commercial fishers through education, stakeholder engagement, and applied research.

4. Environmental Literacy and Workforce Development

We invest in the next generation of coastal stewards through K–12 education, teacher training, internships, graduate fellowships, and community learning opportunities. Our programs build coastal knowledge and skills while strengthening career pathways in science, conservation, and resource management.
