LI's Peconic Bays, the site of the Island's first brown tide bloom in 1985, remained brown tide-free for a fifth consecutive year in 2000 (and possibly a sixth in 2001), but BTRI investigators documented high cell counts of the alga in parts of Great South Bay this past spring. (November 2001)
