Current Opportunities:

Animal Husbandry and Training Intern
New York Aquarium, Brooklyn, NY

Volunteers and Interns
The New York Aquarium's Animal Husbandry and Training Internship Program expands upon the Aquarium's long-term efforts to educate future Animal Care professionals. Interns gain hands-on experience by providing valuable assistance to the Aquarium staff as we work to maintain our standards of excellence. Internship activities include participating in shows and training sessions, SCUBA diving and observing and recording animal behavior.
Interns divide their time between three divisions of the Animal Department.
1. Behavioral Husbandry - work closely with California sea lions and their trainers in animal shows and encounters.
2. Sea Cliffs Mammals/Penguins - assist keepers in the care of walruses, sea lions, harbor seals, northern fur seals, sea otters and penguins.
3. Sea Cliffs Fish - assist in the care of sharks, sea turtles, various fish species and invertebrates.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium
Marine Mammal Internship - Rocky Shores
The Rocky Shores/Marine Mammal internship is an in-depth program requiring a 32 to 40 hour per week commitment, for a minimum of 400 hours and at least ten weeks. Interns must be flexible with their schedule, and have the ability to work weekdays, weekends and holidays. It is an unpaid position and there is no housing provided. We will do everything possible to accommodate school requirements for those who can earn class credit for internships. The internship program at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium is designed to provide participants with practical learning experience and knowledge in the field of animal husbandry (with an emphasis on marine mammals and seabirds). In return, the intern makes a significant contribution to the Rocky Shores area at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.

Volunteer Reef Diver/Angler
New York
Help Keep an Eye on Reef Populations! The DEC Marine Artificial Reef Monitoring Program can benefit from the observations made by divers to learn what is happening on the various artificial reefs sites. Divers can help DEC by recording specific details of each dive, such as environmental conditions and types and numbers of animals they see. The recorded information can help monitor the benefit of these reefs to the recreational fishing and diving communities and can also document local abundance of fish, lobsters, and other marine animals. Furthermore, the personal dive observations you provide will help the DEC to develop a more effective artificial reef program that can enhance future diving and fishing opportunities in New York's marine waters.
For more: If you would like to participate in this program, visist http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9
