National Estuary Day & International Coastal Cleanup Day

National Estuary Day and International Coastal Cleanup Day are both on Saturday, Sept 25, 2010. How will you be helping this weekend?

Volunteers Needed for Beach Clean-ups

September 20, 2010 - Now is the chance to do your share in improving the quality of your local beach. As part of the Ocean Conservancy’s 25th annual International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 25 Connecticut and New York beaches are having cleanups in September and October. Visit Save the Sound to find out about cleanup sites in Connecticut beaches and the American Littoral Society for information about New York Beaches. Both organizations received Futures Fund grants to help organize the cleanups

Visit Your Local Shore on National Estuaries Day

Sept. 25 is also National Estuaries Day, an annual celebration of the vibrant coastal areas where rivers meet the sea. Celebrated on the last Saturday in September, National Estuaries Day is a great opportunity to learn more about coastal ecosystems and how you can help to protect them. This year, the Futures Fund provided grants to help fund National Estuaries Day events at the Alley Pond Environmental Center in Douglaston Queens, a waterfront park in Astoria, and the Mystic Aquarium. Visit the Estuaries.gov Web site to learn more about National Estuaries Day.
