Wind, waves and water level changes lead to transformations in circulation, sediment transport, and erosion in New York’s Great Lakes, Hudson River, and marine coastal waters. Climate change and interbasin water transfers make New York’s coastlines vulnerable to billions of dollars worth of erosion, flooding and wind damage. Millions of dollars are spent each year by private individuals, municipalities, and the state and federal governments to protect New York’s valuable coastal assets.
Through its research and extension programs, New York Sea Grant makes invaluable contributions by educating stakeholders of the causes and impacts of coastal hazards as well as providing technical assistance to local, state and federal partners about the efficacy of planned prevention and mitigation projects and activities.
