Job Announcement: Associate Director of NYSG's Extension Program

Position Description for ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR for Extension, New York Sea Grant Institute (NYSGI) / ASSISTANT DIRECTOR for Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) – Coastal Programs (includes Marine and Great Lakes)

appointment. Affiliation with an appropriate academic department is possible by mutual consent.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and administration for Sea Grant Extension and CCE coastal programs in Cornell Cooperative Extension.  (50%)

  • Serve as Associate Director, for NYSGI, participating in overall program management to include providing assistance in establishment of program direction, and development and maintenance of contacts with academic units, key agencies and legislative liaisons throughout New York State. (25%)

  • Engage in the design, implementation, and evaluation of a personal extension education program in support of Sea Grant Extension and coastal programs in CCE statewide.  (25%)

POSITION SUPERVISION:
The incumbent will report jointly to the Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension (or designee) and the New York Sea Grant Institute Director.  An annual performance review will be conducted jointly by the co-supervisors with input from others as appropriate.  If an adjunct appointment is made in an appropriate academic unit, the head of said unit would be consulted directly.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide leadership for Sea Grant Extension programs at Cornell University, and represent the New York Sea Grant Institute at appropriate department and unit meetings.

Participate as an active member of Cornell Cooperative Extension Directors Council, and provide overall leadership for Coastal Programming within CCE.

Assist as a member of the NYSGI program management team in formulation of research and outreach priorities and directions and in the maintenance of Institute advisory mechanisms and groups.  As designated by the NYSGI Director, serve as NYSGI's liaison with specific agencies and programs.  If designated by the NYSGI Board of Governors, serve as the Acting or Interim NYSGI Director, should that position be vacated.

Provide leadership and serve as supervisor to Sea Grant Marine and Great Lakes district program coordinators and other staff as appropriate.

Maintain overall program responsibility for grant proposal development, submission, and subsequent reporting requirements for all proposals involving Sea Grant Extension.

In collaboration with the Institute Director and the Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension, provide liaison to the National Sea Grant College Program Office and other entities as appropriate in matters pertaining to the delivery of coastal extension services in New York State.

Develop and carry out an extension education program, including, if appropriate, relevant applied research, in support of Sea Grant Extension Program priorities.  Develop grant proposals to support these extension and research activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required -
An earned doctorate with at least 5 years professional research and extension experience in aquatic science, natural resource or conservation management, or other environmental sciences; or a Masters degree with 10 years programmatic and progressive administrative experience in the above fields and demonstrated leadership experience.
Substantive professional experience in university-based outreach or non-formal education programs, as well as management or coordination of such programs.

Demonstrated skills and success in program management, grant-writing, budget development, and staff supervision.

Preferred -
Direct knowledge of Sea Grant or other marine extension programs. Experience with the academic community of a major research institution.  Direct experience in academic research and extension/outreach.
